SWOP hosted a workshop on ‘The Making of Informal Settlements in Post-Apartheid South Africa' on the 7th of December. The one-day programme brought together academics and civil society practitioners to discuss different aspects of life in informal settlements. The workshop emanated from discussions around the diverse research work that SWOP has done in informal settlements and putting this work in to a broader discussion.
The four panels placed a wide range of work on informal settlements in conversation: Land tenure and models of governance; Labour and livelihoods in informal settlements; Politics; Citizenship and belonging.
