Three new SWOP Working Papers are now available for download. The three papers were launched together at the SWOP Breakfast Seminar on the 4th of October 2019. The papers are available for download by clicking on the titles listed below.
These three papers address the question of a just transition from coal and the implications for workers and communities. They demonstrate three different points: firstly Dineo Skosana shows how coal mining and burning has meant the dispossession of land, livelihoods and even spiritual security as mining companies have descecrated thousands of ancestral graves. In the second paper Victor Munnik argues why we need a new analytical framework for thinking about coal which pays more attention to the social and environmental damage it causes, and lastly Jacklyn Cock shows that resistance to coal is increasing but there is little agreement on what a just transition from coal would mean, especially for workers and local communities. However it could mean revolutionary and transformative change to a more just and equal society.
