Jacklyn Cock, a staff member at SWOP, has been appointed to the Cosatu Panel of Experts on a just transition from coal for workers. The panel is tasked with updating the 2011 Cosatu Climate Change policy in which Cock participat
ed. This policy promoted the concept of a just transition as a driver of deep, transformative change towards a more just and equal society. Cock highlights that 'a concern is that the voices and lived experiences of those most affected by climate change: coal workers and those communities living near coal mines and coal fired power stations are not heard in current debates. Instead powerful voices have stripped the notion of a just transition of its revolutionary potential and reduced it to mean only a new, privatised energy regime'.
