SWOP Hosts Informal Settlements Workshop

SWOP hosted a workshop on ‘The Making of Informal Settlements in Post-Apartheid South Africa' on the 7th of December. The one-day programme brought together academics and civil society practitioners to discuss different aspects of life in informal settlements. The workshop emanated from discussions around the diverse research work that SWOP has done in informal settlements and putting this work in to a broader discussion. The four panels placed a wide range of work on informal settlements in conversation: Land tenure and models of governance; Labour and livelihoods in informal settlements; Politics; Citizenship and belonging.

SWOP Director Karl von Holdt is standing down from the director position in order to concentrate on two large-scale SWOP research projects – popular politics in the Brics, and the Mellon Violence States, States of Violence project. There is now an intensive search underway for potential candidates for Director, and the job has been advertised on the Wits University Portal.
